Doctor Dan the Bandage Man
Millions of baby boomers remember little Dan, who stops crying over a scratch as soon as Mother puts a bandage on it. Soon the dolls and teddy bears in Dan’s house are wearing bandages, too. This charming story from the 1950s was so popular that it’s now featured in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.Product Placement: Features of Band-Aid packaging are described when Dan patches up his sister Carly's doll:
-
He pulled out the little string on the bandage wrap. He picked the bandage out and held the two stiff pieces. And zip! That bandage was on the doll's head. - TvTropes
A Note from the Publishers
For a long, long time, the publishers have been ardent admirers of BAND-AID Band-ages-not only for themselves (publishers seem to cut themselves more than other people) but because of their effect on children. We've noted that BAND-AID Bandages not only cheer and comfort small boys and girls who bang themselves up, but that they make wonderful playthings as well. No one quite knows how many millions of dolls and stuffed toys and live pets have been patched up in this manner.
Consequently, when the idea for this book came to us, we promptly went to Johnson & Johnson and asked them if they would be willing to help us. They were very nice about it and asked that we point out that BAND-AID is Johnson & Johnson's trade-mark for its brand of adhesive bandages and for several other products in its line.
1950 Little Golden Book published Doctor Dan The Bandage Man
Summary - The story is about a little boy who scratches his finger while playing. He runs to his mom, who washes it clean and bandages his finger good as new with a BAND-AID® Brand adhesive bandage. For the rest of the book, every time a friend, family member, pet or favorite toy gets a boo-boo, Dan puts a bandage on it to make it better.

A Note from the Publishers
MEET DAN-sometimes he makes believe he's a space man. Other times he pretends he's a fireman, but most times he plays Doctor Dan, the Bandage Man. Right here on the very first page of this book, Doctor Dan has his supply of real BAND-AID Stars 'n Strips. They're colorful plastic bandages made especially for young people like Doctor Dan and his brothers and his sisters and all their friends.
We hope and believe that both this book and the bandages will be a real help around your house in teaching first-aid habits to the very youngest readers. That's all, except we'd like to thank Johnson and Johnson for supplying us with these bandages; and state, just for the record, that BAND-AID is the trademark for their brand of adhesive bandages, and for several other Johnson and Johnson products.

Doctor Dan Classic (2004)
“These were really kid-friendly designs, with bright primary colors,” Gurowitz says. “And the era of children using the adhesive bandages as stickers officially began. It wasn’t enough to just cover up your cut—you had to have an adhesive bandage with a theme or characters.”
